Classical Violin and Viola Studies (BA)

 

The basic aim of the violin and viola main subjects on the bachelor level is to reach a reliable technical level, to establish the foundations of further artistic and pedagogical advancement, to prepare the students for the master training. Students have to pass a compulsory exam in their main subject at the end of each semester, which guarantees constant professional control.

 

Classical Violin Studies:

 

Examination materials: candidate will be evaluated based upon performance of the following

 

1. semester exam material: Two pieces of your choice – Ex. Virtuoso showpiece and one etude, or one movement of a concerto (I. or III. movement)- with one Bach Solo Sonata or Partita movement, or one etude and one movement of a concerto (I. or III. movement), etc.

2. semester exam material: One etude– two movements from J. S: Bach Solo Sonatas or Partitas for violin – one concerto movement (I. or III. movement)

3. semester compulsory technical exam material:: 3 scales (2 major + 1 minor v. 2 minor + 1 major) – The scales should be performed in 4 octaves, three notes to one beat at moderato and presto tempi.– Doublestops – thirds, sixths, octaves – in the tempo of your choice and until VI. position. – Two scales must be of four octaves, and one must be of three octaves (the three-octaves scale from C Major)

Etudes: 1 Dont etude – 1 Paganini etude – 1 Etude of choice (Dont, Wienawski op. 10 vagy op. 18, Paganini, Hubay, Ernst etc.)

4. semester exam material: Two movements from J. S: Bach Sonata or Partita for Solo Violin – Outer movement of a concerto – Virtuosic piece

5. semester exam material: One etude (Paganini, Wienawski op. 10, Hubay, Ernst) – One contemporary Hungarian work, either for solo violin or violin and piano. Piece must be. 5 to 10 minutes.– One Mozart Violin Concerto, movements I. or II. and III. (Bärenreiter – edition)

6. semester exam material: (the final exam of the training is the performance of a Diploma Concert based on the following criteria: One Etude – J. S. Bach: d minor Chaconne; g minor Adagio and Fuge, or Fugue and Siciliano; a minor Grave and Fuga or Fuga and Andante; or C major Adagio and Fuga or Fuga and Largo – The outer movement of a concerto – A romantique or 20th Century chamber piece chosen by the student.

 

Classical Viola Studies

 

Examination materials: candidate will be evaluated based upon performance of the following

 

1. semester: Etudes: Gaviniès, Hoffmeister – Concerti, Sonatas: Stamitz, Hoffmeister Viola Concerto – one pre-classical sonata – Solo material: Bach d-minor cello suite

2. semester: Etudes: Gaviniès, Hoffmeister – Concerti, Sonatas: Stamitz, Hoffmeister Viola Concerto, Hummel sonata – Solo work: Bach G-major Cello Suite

3. semester: Etudes: Lukács, Gaviniès – Concerti, Sonatas: Dávid Gy. Viola Concerto – Brahms E-flat major sonata – Solo work: Bach g-minor solo sonata

4. semester: Etudes: Lukács, Gaviniès – Concerti, Sonatas: Hindemith: Trauermusik – Brahms E flat major sonata, f-minor sonata – Solo work: Bach b minor partita

5. semester: Etudes: Lukács, Vieux – Concerti, Sonatas: Walton Viola Concerto – Brahms E flat major sonata, f-minor sonata – Solo work: one Reger solo suite

6. semester: – Etudes: Vieux – Concerti, Sonatas: Walton Viola Concerto – Schubert Arpeggione sonata – Solo work: Hindemith Op. 25. Nr. 1

 

 

 

 

Further Requirements:

Knowledge of repertoire. Upon completion of studies of violin and viola, most candidates will continue their careers as orchestral players. It is imperative for candidates to become familiar and proficient in orchestral repertoire that will appear later as audition material.

 

Through orchestral work, the candidate will experience various styles of music, and will learn to distinguish between the contrasting periods, genres, and techniques.

 

Authentic interpretation, orchestral metre and phrasing, adjustment, orchestral agogics and the development of musical taste are all important parts of the tuition. 

 

Orchestral Performances: Each candidate will be required to perform in at least one orchestra concert per semester.
