The Big Band of the Jazz Department

The Jazz Department’s big band has been operating since the foundation of the department. Participation in the big band is compulsory for jazz wind majors throughout their studies, while those with majors of the rhythm section have to play in the band for one year.

The priority of the ensemble is rather understanding and learning the style and concept behind big bands on a high level than performing concerts on a regular basis. The band has numerous opportunities, however, to play at concerts and to participate at festivals.

More and more modern and contemporary works, compositions of students have become part of the Academy’s big band, thus making it an ever developing, fresh and dynamic ensemble group.

Since 1987, the ensemble has been led by Attila László.

  • The Big Band of the Jazz Department
My true guiding principle...which I have been fully aware of ever since I have come upon myself as a composer: the ideal of the brotherhood of peoples, brotherhood created despite war and all conflict. It is this ideal which I work with all my power to serve through my music; this is why I do not avoid any influence, be it from Slovak, Rumanian, Arabic or any other source. The only thing that matters is that the source be pure, fresh and healthy!(Béla Bartók)
